Competency-Based Approach

A major trend in ISD is the competency-based, functional-context approach, described in the writings of Tom Sticht, Larry Mickulecky, and others. This approach focuses on the learner, with heavy emphasis on individual learning plans.

Features of the competency-based approach are:

  • Occupational analysis identifies competencies (performance objectives) required for successful performance.

  • The validity of competencies is verified through people who actually perform the job.

  • Criteria (standards) for adequate or excellent performance, and the conditions under which the job is to be performed, are made known to learners from the beginning.
