Competency-Based Approach
A major trend in ISD is the competency-based, functional-context approach, described in the writings of Tom Sticht, Larry Mickulecky, and others. This approach focuses on the learner, with heavy emphasis on individual learning plans.
Features of the competency-based approach are:
Occupational analysis identifies competencies (performance objectives) required for successful performance.
The validity of competencies is verified through people who actually perform the job.
Criteria (standards) for adequate or excellent performance, and the conditions under which the job is to be performed, are made known to learners from the beginning.
