Chapter 4 Beards

MAKING A GOATEE

In the University of Central Florida production of Pippin, Mark Brotherton played double roles: King Charles and Grandma Bertha. The beard made a distinctive difference between these two roles. When the actor wore the beard, he portrayed a powerful king (Figure 4-1); beardless, he was a beautiful and kind grandmother.

PROCEDURE FOR MAKING A GOATEE

•  Fine flesh-toned ventilating lace

•  Ventilating needle

•  Beard block

•  Poly stuffing or cotton balls

•  Narrow twill tape

•  T-pins

•  Scotch tape
