Attenuation Modeling for Offshore Pipelines

Abstract

Attenuation calculations using the Uhlig and Morgan and boundary element modeling approaches have their limitations. The Uhlig and Morgan approach does not consider anode resistance, while the boundary element modeling approach removes the metallic path resistance from its calculations. Similarly, the slope parameter approach to cathodic protection (CP) design also excludes the metallic path resistance. This chapter introduces an approach that includes all four resistances in CP modeling. A new first-principles-based approach supports this attenuation model.
