Corrosion Control for Existing Offshore Pipelines

Abstract

Various factors that apply to implementing a new cathodic protection (CP) system also apply to CP retrofitting. High-strength steel pipes exposed to seawater have minimal corrosion resistance. Impressed current and galvanic sacrificial anode CP techniques are used, along with coating systems, to protect these pipes. The initial design lives of pipelines are often 20 to 25 years or less. However, most pipelines operate longer than their designed life periods. These aging pipelines lack sufficient corrosion protection because the anodes in their CP systems have been consumed and are unable to generate the necessary protection potentials.
