Chapter Eleven

Introduction to Retrofitting

Abstract

As the name suggests, retrofitting is the after-the-fact provision of cathodic protection (CP). CP retrofitting is the product of necessity. Even though a submerged structure is protected by a designed cathodic protection system, damage to the anodes or coating might result in the CP system no longer functioning as designed. In such cases, retrofitting is required to bring the cathodic system to its functional level. Retrofitting may also become necessary when a structure that was not protected by a CP system now needs this level of protection due to corrosion damage.
