Coating for Corrosion Prevention

Abstract

This chapter discusses coating as means of corrosion protection. When used in conjunction with cathodic protection, coatings enhance the effect of the system. The application of a coating affects its ability to protect a structure from corrosion, however, and this chapter considers the history of coating system development. The definitions of paint and coating are established, and different types of paints and coatings are described. Coating systems can be very harmful to the environment and human health, and the use of volatile organic substances in coatings is regulated.
