Chapter Six

Offshore Structures

Abstract

This chapter discusses cathodic protection from a historical perspective, before considering the cathodic protection of fixed offshore structures, such as platforms, SPARS, FPS, and PELTS. The chapter also details the protection criteria involved with cathodic protection, including the salinity and resistivity of seawater, and it provides methods for calculating the area to be cathodically protected and the anodic current output required to achieve the desired protection level. Determination of the protection current required for various stages of a structure is discussed, and further calculations address anode selection and current drain. In addition, the chapter considers the protection requirements ...
