Case Study 2: SpaceX

Elon Musk is a serial entrepreneur who, after founding PayPal, set out to change the world. Tesla Motors, a maker of electric vehicles, would warrant a case study of its own, but here we would like to focus on SpaceX, one of his lesser-known ventures.

Disappointed by the slow progress of humans into space over the past decades, Musk seriously considered donating a large share of his wealth to fund a manned mission to Mars. After analyzing his options, he came to the sobering realization that this at best would fund a one-off stunt similar to the Apollo missions to the Moon but would not lead to a lasting presence of humans on the red planet.
