The famous Dutch yachtsman Conny van Rietschoten, who won the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1978 and 1982, is an example of focus. Before participating in this race, he was entirely unknown in international long-range sailing; he had instead built his family business.

What set him apart from all the sailors of his time was his professional approach to the sport and his focus. He put great emphasis on rehearsing and training, and he invested in research to improve the crew’s clothing and the ability to forecast weather.
