As the story goes, rugby was invented by a rule breaker, William Webb Ellis, in 1823 at Rugby School. He allegedly caught the ball while playing football and ran toward the opposition goal line and put the ball down.

In critical elements of the game, players must combine to win the ball. Interestingly for some elements, such as the scrum, players from both sides have to come together to make it work. In other words, it requires both teams to cooperate to actually compete.
