There is no doubt that, in the two years or so since the first production version of Swing was released, it has gradually taken over from the Abstract Window Toolkit (AWT) as the preferred graphical component set for client-side Java applications. With this increase in reliance on Swing has come a greater demand for development staff who are familiar with its intricacies and who know how to go beyond the obvious and get the best out of the powerful components that Swing contains.
