Part 2: FUNCTIONAL REFERENCE
The chapters in this section of the book, Chapters 8 through 14, are a functional reference. They describe how each PHP function works: what arguments are expected, what value is returned, and how they ought to be used. The functions are grouped generally by what they do.
Chapter 8 is concerned with I/O—input and output. Input functions send and receive information to the browser, and output functions read and write to the file system or to the network. Chapter 9 is all about manipulating data. There are functions for handling arrays, functions for searching for information inside strings, and functions for encoding and decoding information.
