Chapter 5, “J2EE Patterns Overview,” provides an overview of the J2EE Pattern Catalog with a discussion on our tiered approach. The chapter provides a guide to the pattern catalog and describes the terminology and UML Stereotypes used to describe each pattern. The template used to document each pattern is also defined and discussed. One of the important aspects of the chapter is the discussion of the relationships among various patterns in the catalog—both with each other, as well as with patterns in other literature, such as “Design Patterns” [GoF], “Patterns of Software Architecture,” Volume 1 [POSA1] and Volume 2 [POSA2].
