This book has come along at exactly the right time. As economic problems dominate the headlines, it might be easy to forget the importance of sustainability to the future success of business and the planet. As the stories in this book show, far from being a financial burden on businesses, building a green economy is good for the bottom line.
At Business in the Community we work with businesses across the UK, helping them to develop and showcase their corporate responsibility approaches. Our current environment campaign, the Prince’s May Day Network (www.maydaynetwork.com) was founded by perhaps the leading ‘green guru’, HRH The Prince of Wales. It is helping over 1350 businesses and organisations of all sectors and sizes to embrace the benefits and tackle the challenges of the necessary move to a low-carbon economy.
Through this campaign we are able to showcase examples of best practice to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the need for collaborative action and the clear business benefits to a strategic approach. Indeed, one of the gurus featured in this book, Tony Juniper, is a member of the Advisory Group that is helping to shape the direction of the Network.
