C/A (Cutaway)

This can apply to any shot that is not a master; for example, a close-up. Such a shot often emphasises or highlights a particular aspect of events when it is inserted in the main action.

Cutaways are also used as a safety measure. For example, a woman is telling a long story. Several cutaways are taken of her audience. The woman’s story can then either be shortened by cutting away to the audience, or the cutaways can be used for dramatic effect – to build up atmosphere, heighten tension and generally give pace to a scene.
