Changing the Format-first Mindset

In the section titled “Content Lifecycle Myths”, we assert that technical staff often focus on the containers rather than the contents when building and rolling out content solutions. In XML, the containers – the content models – are specifically built so that authors can focus on the content and not worry about the presentation.

In projects where visual formatting is determined first, content becomes an afterthought. The container defined by the visual presentation drives what should go inside of it, rather than the other way around. We call this design-driven content.
