Semantics Change the Experience of Media

Let’s look at a straight-forward, concrete example where semantics allows a computer to process content in powerful ways. We are using Facebook as the platform because it has become a familiar user experience world wide, but you should be able to follow the example even if you don’t use Facebook.

This example looks at semantics applied to photographs.[69] When you have photos on your computer, you can look at the details or properties of the individual files. Most people don’t bother looking, but if you do, you will see extra data about the file – this extra data is called metadata. Metadata includes things like the file name, file type, file size, date taken, and date modified.
