Utilization and Systematization of Video Assets

This chapter describes some examples of business solutions for the content industry. Yamagata, a prefecture in Japan, has for some time been promoting video content distribution as a new local industry. The examples are based on the technologies mentioned in this book. Although the promotion of local industries is a policy of the government of Japan, this idea began in Yamagata and is now spreading throughout the country.

7.1.1 INDUSTRIAL STRUCTURE AND BUSINESS TREND FOR ADDED VALUE CREATION IN MODERN SOCIETY

‘Tell the world about Japanese culture’ is an important plan of the e-Japan 2003 Project. This is in line with national policy which advocates digitizing, preserving, and sending broad information about national culture both within and outside Japan. It has as a background the national belief that industries that provide added value will be the only ones to survive in the 21st century especially as past success stories have been collapsing since the 1990s. With this belief fixed in mind, national investment has become vital for the software industry, so that it can demonstrate how its products can improve the quality of life, offering an alternative to the nation's dependence on the electronic industry.
