Archive-correlated Technology Standards

Brief explanations of archive-correlated standards of digital content production for a large-scale archive are described in this chapter. As far as archives are concerned, the activities of FIAT/IFTA and P/FTA are explained. As far as metadata are concerned, the activity of P/META and outlines of the standards MPEG-7, MXF, and Content ID are explained. And as far as production is concerned, the activity of P/FTP and an outline of UMID are explained.

3.1 STANDARDS RELATED TO ARCHIVES

3.1.1 FIAT/IFTA1

The International Federation of Television Archives (FIAT/IFTA) was established in 1977. Commencing with ARD (Germany), the BBC (UK), INA (France), and RAI (Italy), it now consists of 180 members from over 70 countries. This professional association provides a means for cooperation among television archives, multimedia and audio-visual (AV) archives and libraries. The objectives of FIAT are as follows:

  • to provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience between its members;
  • to promote the study of any topic relevant to the development and use of AV archives;
  • to establish international standards on key issues regarding all aspects of AV media archive management;
  • to promote professional standards and best practices in the field;
  • to support developing archives and to foster regional and interregional cooperation;
