4.3. Basic Elements of an Inventory

While the data gathered in an inventory will vary depending on your content set, your projects needs, and your goals, most inventories have certain basic elements in common, as detailed below.

4.3.1. URL

Looking at a resource’s URL structure lets you evaluate several things.

Length and clarity: Shorter URLs are better for both human readability and search engine optimization (SEO). A long URL may not be rendered by some browsers and is not memorable to a human who may later want to directly type it in. It’s also a best practice to use hyphens (rather than underscores or blank spaces) between words in a URL; a quick look at the URL list helps you identify whether your URLs follow this practice.
