Teaching of Social Science: History, Context and Challenges

This is a conceptual paper, which is divided into two sections that discuss some of the issues related to the world of Social Science in general and the teaching of Social Science in schools in particular. To begin with, the first section of the paper goes into a brief history of the idea of Social Science. It, then, discusses the context within which Social Science developed in independent India. It elaborates some of the challenges inherent in the teaching of Social Sciences in schools, specifically in the context of history.
