After Independence, as the political leadership began to put their minds together to thrash out a model of future India, they had many issues to resolve. However, there was no such ambiguity on the issue of democracy. It was a foregone conclusion, even before the Constituent Assembly began the business of finalizing the political structure of the new State, that it would be a democracy. More than half a century has since passed and that consensus about democracy remains.
