Because of the extensive bandwidth requirements of the video signal, it is desirable to make use of a bandwidth saving technique. The signal information is fully contained in each of the two sidebands of the modulated carrier; and provided the carrier is present, one sideband may be suppressed altogether. The single sideband transmission technique can reduce the bandwidth requirement to half, viz. 5 MHz. However, it is not possible to do this in the case of a television signal because a television signal also contains very low frequencies including even the dc information.
