A place safe for human use for rest and recreation is crucial in any society. Traditionally, that safe place has been the home or a community facility. As the consumer society has developed and the traditional roles of women have changed, shopping has become an important part of everyday life, with most of it taking place in its own safe place—the mall. Today, shopping can be a purely functional activity or part of leisure. Leisure in contemporary America and other Western societies is regularly associated with shopping.
