Characteristic Derivation
All characteristics are populated based on one of two approaches—either via actual posted values from a record or via derivation. All fixed characteristics that are delivered with your operating concern have a set derivation that is used in ABAP code behind the scenes. Derivation of fixed characteristics cannot be changed. For the other characteristics that are added to an operating concern—from the field catalog, from reference tables, and those that are user-defined—characteristic derivation must be defined. There are three ways to create characteristic derivation: the derivation table lookup, derivation structures and rules, and derivation user-exits.
