Conclusion

TPC benchmarks have considerable value to database and system vendors for stress testing and regression testing. They are well established, stable, scalable, and widely accepted throughout the industry.

At the same time, they are highly optimized and differ significantly from most end-user application environments and, as such, rarely offer a good basis for system sizing. For the same reasons, they are not the best choice for comparing the performance of competing hardware or database platforms.

For sizing and for performance comparisons, the best measure is a user’s own workload. If that workload is based on an established application suite, such as SAP, Oracle Applications, or Peoplesoft, then published benchmarks for those platforms ...
