Common Performance Metrics

Some useful metrics can be derived from data made available by the operating system. For a complete picture, some data will also need to be collected from applications. Both types of metrics are discussed below.

System Metrics

The most commonly reported system metrics are CPU utilization, disk input/output operations (I/Os) per second (IOPS), disk throughput, and network IOPS.

CPU utilization is the sum of user and system CPU percentage. For servers with multiple CPUs, the CPU utilization is the average of the percentages for each of the individual CPUs.
