Problem-Solving Strategy Development

Occasionally in an interview someone outlines a credible strategy for finding the problem. The answer might go something like this:

“First, I would try to get some background to the problem. I’d ask what they mean by ‘performing badly.’ Are response times the issue? If so, how much improvement is needed: ten percent or one hundred percent?

“Then, I would ask when the problem first appeared. Did anything else happen at the same time; did they implement a new release of the application software or add fifty more users to the system?

“Where I went next would depend on the answers to these questions.

“If the only change was to the applications, I would refer the problem to the developers. If more users had been ...
