Volume Managers

The Solaris Operating Environment does not provide all the tools necessary to achieve an optimal data layout. But fortunately, the missing pieces are readily available in the form of the Veritas Volume Manager (Veritas) and Solaris Volume Manager (SVM, previously referred to Logical Volume Manager, and before that as Solstice DiskSuite). Both are widely used within the Sun user community.

Veritas and SVM are volume managers that provide specialized help in both laying out data and achieving highly available disk subsystems. They do this by implementing various levels of RAID in software.
