Storage Subsystems

Storage subsystems have grown in variety and complexity in recent years. Before we examine data layout issues, we briefly consider some of the primary ways in which storage is delivered to end users.

Individually Addressable Disks

The simplest storage configuration consists of disks that are individually addressable by the operating system. Such disks are usually located in racks or individual storage cabinets, and the host-based storage adapter that connects the disks to the server is usually based on Fiber Channel or Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) technology.
