Chapter 16. Configuring the Network

When configuring a network for use by a database server, you should mainly consider network bandwidth and network latency.

Network bandwidth is crucial since performance will inevitably suffer if the network is unable to sustain the packet rate generated by the applications. Studies have suggested that user network bandwidth requirements are quadrupling every three years.

Network latency is equally important since it affects response time. Having unlimited bandwidth doesn’t help if the latency is unacceptable. It’s like having an eight-lane freeway with choked access roads.
