Memory Interleaving

For optimal performance, memory should be interleaved as much as possible. Interleaving in this context refers to the system carrying out a single physical memory access using more than one memory bank. It is a memory equivalent of disk striping and, like disk striping, can boost overall system performance. Memory striping can enhance performance by a small percentage, and the benefit increases as the number of memory banks and the memory capacity increase.

Memory interleaving typically requires memory banks to be filled with memory of the same density. A system with a mix of memory densities is still able to use interleaving by linking only those banks filled with memory of the same density. The end result, though, is likely ...
