Chapter 14. Configuring Systems

It is a mistake to think you can buy a computer system, install and populate a database, and magically achieve optimal performance. Given the capabilities of modern computer systems, you might reasonably expect efficient performance out of the box. While that is the goal, we’re not there yet.

The Solaris Operating Environment is not the main culprit for the configuration workload; in fact, we will see that very little Solaris configuration is necessary. The main issue is efficient data layout, although there are a number of other items on the checklist.
