Using Published TPC Results for Sizing

Given the availability of published TPC (Transaction Processing Performance Council) benchmarks, it is tempting to use them for sizing. TPC benchmarks are discussed in detail in Chapter 27; if you are not familiar with the details of TPC benchmarks, it might be worth briefly visiting that discussion before reading on.

Using TPC-C to Size Real-World OLTP Servers

If you are brave enough to use TPC-C results for sizing, here are a few steps to arrive at a rough estimate (the emphasis is on rough!):

Double the reported transactions per minute to include all transactions, not just new-order transactions (the reported TPC-C throughput includes only new-order transactions).
