System Tablespaces

The DB2 system catalogs and their views are stored in an SMS tablespace, called SYSCATSPACE, created when the database is created. A new database is also created with two other SMS tablespaces: USERSPACE1 (for user data) and TEMPSPACE1 (a temporary tablespace).

Each database must have at least one temporary tablespace. Temporary tablespaces are used when sorts overflow from memory to disk. SQL queries with group by or order by clauses, for example, result in sorts, as do index create operations.
