Process Model

Each DB2 Universal Database for Solaris database is associated with an instance. An instance belongs to a specific user and may contain more than one database, all of which share the same instance characteristics. When DB2 is started, only the instance is established, involving a small amount of shared memory and a number of DB2 system processes. The database is only started when the first user connects to it. At that time, all the database shared memory segments are allocated and the processes specific to the database are started, including the logger, the pagecleaners, the prefetchers, and an agent process for the connected user.
