Physical Data Storage

The smallest unit of physical storage used by XPS is the chunk. A chunk can be either a raw device (including volume manager devices and LUNs from storage arrays) or a file system file (such as a UFS file). Informix recommends using raw devices for optimal performance.

Chunks are created with the name of the raw device or file (or a symlink to it), a size, and an offset. The offset means that more than one chunk can be placed in a single raw device or file, although this strategy is not recommended.

XPS also supports mirroring of chunks. Data is copied from the primary chunk to the mirror chunk. In the event of a physical disk failure, the mirror chunk will be brought online automatically.
