System Tablespace

The SYSTEM tablespace stores Oracle’s internal data dictionary tables, which contain information about data files, tablespaces, tables, indexes, clusters, rollback segments, views, synonyms, users, grants, stored procedures, triggers, and other such data. At a minimum, every database has a SYSTEM tablespace, although usually other tablespaces are created and user data is kept out of the SYSTEM tablespace. User tables must be explicitly placed in other tablespaces, or their location defaults to the SYSTEM tablespace.

Temporary tablespaces and rollback segments, already discussed in this chapter, are other objects directly related to system rather than user activities.
