Decision Support Systems (DSS)

Decision Support Systems are usually fed from OLTP databases and are used for applications like data warehousing, sales and market analysis, and product planning.

DSS queries may process large volumes of data and carry out complex multiple-table joins with aggregation and multiple predicates and sorts with order by and group by clauses. The result set from a substantial query can be quite small even when significant resources are consumed in arriving at the result.

Since most DSS operations can be parallelized, DSS workloads lend themselves well to parallelization for performance improvement. Some tables can be supported by multiple indexes to aid performance, adding significantly to the overall storage capacity ...
