Transaction Monitors

Transaction monitors, or TP monitors, are used in Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) environments as an efficient mechanism for managing transactions and routing them within a network. (See Chapter 6 for a description of OLTP workloads.) TP monitors are often used in conjunction with databases, especially when heavy transaction loads must be supported.

Transaction monitors can significantly reduce the CPU resource required to process transactions, although they typically require the application developer to use the APIs associated with the transaction monitor. Examples of commercial transaction monitors include Tuxedo, supplied by BEA Systems, Transarc, Encina, Topend, and the IBM mainframe-based CICS.
