Parallel Processing

With the ready availability of servers with multiple CPUs, database suppliers turned their attention to speeding tasks by parallel processing. By allowing multiple CPUs to participate in key database operations, vendors could reduce operation completion time, sometimes significantly. Today, many tasks can be parallelized, including:

  • Database load and index creation.

  • Bulk inserts and updates.

  • Large query execution.

  • Database backup and restore.
