Shared-Disk Databases on SMPs

One way of extending a database beyond a single SMP system is to use a shared-disk architecture. Real Application Clusters (previously known as Oracle Parallel Server) is a good example of this model. An SMP cluster is the most common shared-disk hardware platform, although MPP systems that support disk sharing can also be used.

Shared-disk databases run a separate database instance on each SMP in the cluster, but they differ from the shared-nothing model in that all data disks are accessible from all the SMP servers. Further, all of the instances have simultaneous access to the entire data set of the database. In other words, multiple instances share a single database.
