From small beginnings in 1988, the Database Engineering (DBE) group at Sun Microsystems Computer Division has grown into a substantial organization, now called Performance and Availability Engineering (PAE). The name change reflects a broader scope for the group. As databases increasingly become commodity products, related technologies such as middleware and Internet applications assume more significant roles. Databases have not ceased to be important, though—they are still at the heart of these new applications.
