The Nature of the Relationship

Sun maintains ongoing relationships with the major UNIX database vendors: Oracle, Sybase, and IBM (IBM encompasses Informix as well as DB2 since IBM’s purchase of the database business of Informix in 2001). Sun workstations were the original development platform for Sybase and Informix and for Oracle’s range of UNIX products. These early involvements provided opportunities for Sun to develop relationships with these companies.

Eventually those partnerships broadened as users installed Sun servers to run their database applications. While DB2 is not developed on Sun, the Sun platform is widely used within IBM for porting and performance work. The development group’s nightly DB2 source code build is run on the Solaris ...
