Configuring BIND 4

Another thing you will find in the 4.9.7 tar ball (it is in the BIND 8 distribution as well) is the BIND Operations Guide (BOG), which might—or might not—be included with your vendor BIND. The BOG is a very complete DNS manual; although it is somewhat abrupt about using new terms and is just a bit dated.

BIND 4 does not have the wealth of configurability that BIND 8 does; it does, however, have more possibilities than you can usually find in the named man page. Zone files used by BIND 4 are identical to the zone files used by BIND 8, except for the $TTL directive that BIND 4 does not support. A BIND 4 slave with a BIND 8 master, which uses $TTL, will give TTL values that are inconsistent with what the BIND 8 master does, ...
