According to legend, the god of love, Eros, was ordered by his mother Aphrodite to punish the beautiful Psyche by making her fall in love with an ugly mortal.1 Instead, Eros fell in love with her. Eros became Psyche’s lover, though she was unaware of his divine nature as he came to her only in the dark. Psyche was overcome by her desire to know her lover and looked at Eros’s face as he slumbered. Eros fled, but Psyche was eventually able to earn her place as his wife by overcoming a series of challenges and earning the favor of the other gods.
