SSL/TLS

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) provide the most common means of interacting with a PKI and certificates. The older SSL protocol was introduced by Netscape as a means of providing secure connections for web transfers using encryption. These two protocols provide secure connections between the client and server for exchanging information. They also provide server authentication (and optionally, client authentication) and confidentiality of information transfers. See Chapter 15 for a detailed explanation.
