It is critical for any engineer to ensure that the addressing used in a network is properly implemented.

IPv6

IPv6 is here. It is important that you review the basics for the Network+ exam.

Address Structure and Address Representation—An IPv6 address has the following address format, where X = a hexadecimal digit in the range of 0–F:

XXXX:XXXX:XXXX:XXXX:XXXX:XXXX:XXXX:XXXX

A hexadecimal digit is 4 bits in size (4 binary bits can represent 16 values). Notice that an IPv6 address has eight fields, and each field contains four hexadecimal digits. The following formula reveals why an IPv6 address is a 128-bit address:

4 bits per digit × 4 digits per field × 8 fields = 128 bits in an IPv6 address
