Chapter 2. Configuring Network Services
Some services are absolutely critical to the operation of a network. You should be well versed in their purpose and be able to describe the elements of a typical configuration. This section prepares you for this task.
DHCP
The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) dramatically reduces the administrative workload in the assignment of IP address information. Instead of manually (statically) assigning addresses to workstations, you rely on a router or server operating system to “lease” address information to clients.
DHCP operates in a four-step process:
STEP 1 Discover stage
STEP 2 Offer
STEP 3 Request
STEP 4 Acknowledgment
