Introduction

In the previous chapter, we discussed a wide variety of different network devices, a number of which are used to provide connectivity between computers, printers, and other devices on a network. Although routers, bridges, and repeaters were commonly used on networks for enabling communication, switches have by and large taken over their roles on most local area networks (LANs). They provide a broad range of functions on a network, with the most basic being the ability for two or more devices to communicate with one another.
